Clean Water Action coordinates the Coalition for a Safe and Healthy Connecticut, a diverse group united in efforts to reduce toxic chemicals in products that harm public health and our environment.

For more than ten years, we’ve led efforts in the state to take on toxic chemicals, and thanks to the efforts of our members and allies, we have lots of good news to share! In 2024, Connecticut became a national leader in the fight against toxic PFAS chemicals with the passage of legislation restricting their use in a wide range of products, including firefighter protective gear.

"We want to, of course, protect our firefighters, but we should do so in a manner that does not harm their health," said Anne Hulick, Connecticut director of Clean Water Action. “And that's why this is so important to find safe alternatives for the heroes that protect us.”

Previous toxics campaign victories include:

  • Landmark laws on BPA in baby bottles, infant formula containers, and other recyclable plastics
  • Restrictions on toxic cadmium in children’s jewelry
  • State contracts that restrict toxic flame retardants in office furniture and school furniture
  • A state ban on toxic PFAS chemicals in firefighting foam and food packaging
